6/27/2023 0 Comments Mercy book jodi picoultThe Boston GlobeWhat would you do for someone you love? Would you lie? Would you leave? Would you kill? Jodi Picoult confronts these powerful issues in Mercy, which follows the path of two cousins driven to extremes by the power of love.Police chief of a small Massachusetts town, Cameron McDonald makes the toughest arrest of his life when his own cousin Jamie comes to him and confesses outright that he has killed his terminally ill wife out of mercy. Picoult writes with a fine touch, a sharp eye for detail and a firm grasp of the delicacy and complexity of human relationships. Classic Picoult storytelling - daring us to imagine how far we would go for those we love the most.'Mercy is a quietly powerful book that examines the boundaries of love and loyalty, courage and forgiveness. Another thought provoking work by Jodi Picoult whose characters challenge us on moral issues arising out of situations any of us might be faced with.

6/27/2023 0 Comments One day david nicholasHe was appointed Chairman in February 1989. He went on to become the show's editor, then ITN’s Editor-in-Chief and later its Chief Executive. Sir David was the producer of the first ever News at Ten, which was originally designed as a 12-week show. We, and indeed the wider industry, owe a great deal to his decades of service and unwavering commitment to high quality journalism.” “His pioneering spirit, innovative approach and dedication to journalism is something that resonates in this building every single day. Said CEO Deborah Turness: “His influence over the way news was covered saw ITN rise from being the underdog to the BBC to become its equal - and often superior - competitor. He built what was a fledging company into one of the most respected and recognised TV news brands in the world and was regarded throughout his 32-year career as one of the greatest pioneers of his generation. Sir David joined ITN in 1960 after moving from the Yorkshire Post to Fleet Street where he worked at the Daily Telegraph and as a sub-editor on the Observer. One of the "great innovators of broadcast journalism" and former ITN Editor-in-Chief, Sir David Nicholas, has died aged 92. 6/27/2023 0 Comments 10th anniversary calvin and hobbesThe Tenth Anniversary Book is not a depressing collection, although it is quite serious in its examination of the ten years of the strip. Watterson believes in the comic as a real art form–and in his hands it often was–but the dynamics of the business, both the physical limitations on the drawing and the way the economics is split between artist and newspaper with a syndicate go-between, restricted the full expression of his art. That frustration with the four panel strip was the reason for Berke Breathed’s early retirement, and is quite likely the reason for Watterson’s as well. Larsen, though, as happy with his medium–his retirement was a factor of creative burnout rather than frustration with the limitations of the comics page of today’s newspaper. Both cartoonists annotated the books themselves, explaining the writing process and the business of cartooning. Like Gary Larsen’s Pre-History of The Far Side, this volume provides a retrospective collection selected by the author, with notes on the origin and evolution of his creation. The announcement last November that Bill Watterson would be retiring his comic strip Calvin and Hobbes at the end of the year should not have surprised anyone–at least, anyone who has read the recently released The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book. By the way, I'm a massive fan of dragons, especially certain small silver dragons (so that was not nice, Raxtus btw). The first book: A shocking beginning for the new saga, the siblings are now caretakers, new cousins are introduced, and there are lot of dragons. Those 5 books managed to hold me captive, like if my chair was a sticky mushroom as I stare at the screen, enjoying each word, returning to certain pages and sentences I enjoyed a lot, and now that it's over, the last thing I can do is give a good review of those series. It is the kind of books that I wish just kept going, since now I'm disappointed that the lecture is over. Fablehaven was a series I held dear, and re read the books a good amount of times, now, Dragonwatch? What is this place? How long will he wait? And what will happen when and if Nina does join him? The Waiting Room is a story of not just love, but of faith, predestination, and philosophy, friendship and self-actualization, of waiting. He waits, watching Nina out of giant windows. But unlike those souls, Jude’s name is never called by the mysterious “receptionist”. That is, until Jude dies and wakes up in The Waiting Room, surrounded by other souls who are all waiting to pass over into their next life. Jude and Nina are the epitome of that whole raw, unflinching love thing that most people are jealous of. This isn’t intended to be a theological treatise or an argument for reincarnation, rather it provides a nice narrative framework to reflect on these issues within the story arc. This is really a delightful story where the author uses a waiting room for your next life to deal with issues of love, life and existence within the context of a couple who are separated by an early death. An informal interview with the author on the book itself. We have a lot going on for her stop on Joe’s Geek Fest: I’m delighted to host the lovely Alysha Kaye on her blog tour for The Waiting Room. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Kingdom by Jack HightIn June 1187, Saladin marches into the Kingdom with an army of over 24,000 and in reprisal imposes a crushing defeat on the Crusader forces at the Horns of Hattin. A full-blooded historical adventure novel for all fans of Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell, Anthony Riches, Ben Kane, Robyn Young and Simon Scarrow. When the murderous knight Reynald of Chatillon raids a caravan heading from Damascus to Mecca and rapes Saladin's sister, the scene is set for war. While Saladin ruthlessly sets about uniting the whole of Arabia under his rule, the Kingdom of Jerusalem is torn apart by treachery and intrigue.
She helps the reader digest ideas about soul-crushing systematic oppression with her absurdist humor. She upends conventional tropes of romantic comedies in a thoughtful, nonshaming way (spoiler: Tom Hanks is the villain). She starts with a deep analysis of levels of good and bad crushing, then explores the emotional labor of flirting, applies literary theory to texts from dudes, contemplates the horrors of (theoretical) cohabitation, and ends with a quasi manifesto for making art out of one’s love troubles. Roberson is a self-described “horned-up perv,” but she’s also well versed in feminist literature and is lethal with a non sequitur. Instead of useful advice, she offers a survival manual for cis straight women living in a patriarchal society that undervalues their work but who still want to smooch hot guys. The title of Roberson’s first book sounds like a dating manual it is so much better than that. The chiefs then decided the group should move to the mouth of the river where there was plenty of game. Some young men went off to fight them and when they returned the next day they carried the bodies of several dead warriors with them. Soldiers were spotted by some hunters to the south of the camp.
